AP DUAL CREDIT
HCC INSTRUCTIONSDear Parents:
Strake Jesuit is pleased to be able to work in partnership with Houston Community College-Northwest to provide students with the opportunity to take Dual Credit classes. The Dual Credit Program enables a high school junior or senior to simultaneously earn high school credit toward graduation and earn college credit toward a bachelor’s degree while he is taking an AP class at Strake Jesuit with no additional work or exams needed. The Strake Jesuit AP class is the college credit class. The AP classes that qualify for the Dual Credit Program are AP Calculus BC and AP Chemistry.
HCC requires a minimum number of students in each class for the Dual Credit Program to actually happen. Therefore, I am encouraging you to enroll your son in this program. The advantage of enrolling in this program is that your son will get the college credit for the AP course he is taking at Jesuit regardless of his performance on the National AP Exam in May. All public universities in Texas will transfer the credit from HCC. For private and out-of-state universities, you can verify the transferability of the credit by calling the university admissions office and asking if they accept HCC college-level credits in transfer. Do not ask if they take High School Dual Credit classes; your son will be transferring a college-level class from HCC not a class from Strake Jesuit. Furthermore, if at the end of the year, he decides he does not want to transfer the credit to the university he will attend, he does not have to. Transferring of college credits is not done automatically; one has to ask for it.
Your son has to get admitted to HCC and he had to register at HCC for the specific dual credit courses this summer. Click on the "HCC Instructions" line at the top of this page for instructions on how to get enrolled in this program. The first step for enrolling in HCC can be done online from your home. For the second step, you need the official SAT or ACT score report or a high school transcript. If your son has not taken the SAT or ACT he has to take the COMPASS Test at HCC. Please read the enclosed information thoroughly so that you follow all the steps of the Dual Credit Program enrolling process.
Notice that if you live In-District for HCC, you do not have to pay any tuition to HCC for this program; see the TUITION-WAIVER INFORMATION section in the enclosed letter for more details. I hope that you find this information useful and that you decide to enroll your son in the Dual Credit Program. If I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to call me at (713) 490-8110. May you have a blessed and relaxed summer.
Sincerely yours,
Carlos Roman
