Crusader of the Year Awards 2020

Every year, four students are presented with the Crusader of the Year award. This annual award recognizes one exemplary student from all grade levels who have demonstrated the characteristics of a Man for Others. The award is ordinarily presented at the Father-Son luncheon, but unfortunately this year’s luncheon was canceled due to the ongoing pandemic. It is with great pleasure that we congratulate Zachariah Wrobel ’23, Joel Crawford ’22, Gerardo Gonzalez Jr. ’21, and Job Trahan ‘20.

Zachariah Wrobel '23
Zachariah Wrobel is a quiet, focused, and determined student who excels in theater. He is kind, friendly, and insightful. He is wise beyond his years. Zachariah is the type of student who is truly a Man for Others - he will step in when asked, but he is always willing to take the initiative to help others and give sage advice. Zachariah is only at the beginning of his journey at Strake Jesuit, but it is clear that he will have a lasting impact on Strake Jesuit whether it is his talent in the theater, his incredible academic intelligence, or his loyalty as a friend. Zachariah is truly one of a kind - the kind we all want to emulate.

Joel Crawford '22
This year's Sophomore Crusader of the Year is the quintessential Strake Jesuit student - intellectually competent, physically fit, religious, committed to doing justice, loving, and open to growth. Despite navigating our most rigorous course of study, Joel Crawford has been one of the top students in a highly competitive class since his first days as a freshman. Joel's outstanding study habits, time management skills, and enviable work ethic have been evident since day one. Even though he strives for excellence in the classroom, Joel will never be described as a reclusive "bookworm" who spends every waking moment outside of the classroom immersed in his studies. He is well-rounded with a broad array of interests and talents. Of all his extra-curricular activities, football has been the most meaningful. Joel takes every aspect of football seriously, from practice to games, to interacting with his teammates. His enthusiasm and energy along with his caring nature makes him a very popular player who's highly regarded by his teammates. A true gentleman and scholar, Joel Crawford is, without question, one of the most impressive members of the Class of 2022 and a very worthy recipient of this great honor.

Gerardo Gonzalez Jr. '21
Gerardo Gonzalez Jr.'s life is spent doing things right and with great passion that at times seems effortless. He is incredibly involved in his Strake Jesuit life. A three-year member of our theater group, he has had leading roles in numerous performances both on-campus and at St. Agnes Academy. Earlier this semester, he was a successful director of a one act play at Strake Jesuit. He is an inducted thespian and over the last two years, he served the theater group as Vice President and this year as President. During his time in office, he initiated more Jesuit activities in conjunction with St. Agnes and dedicated much of his time and thoughts reorganizing the theater storage areas, and significantly improved the quality of the "Comedy Sportz" activity. During his freshman year, he was responsible for originating and developing the Havana Club, an organization for Cuban Americans that emphasizes culture, faith, and community with its members. He was the president of the club in its first two years. This year, Gerardo was a Kairos retreat leader and he has gained so much in his own understanding of faith and life. Although he will continue to be a member of the theater group, he decided to relinquish his current office to be able to give Kairos more of his time. He wants to commit to Kairos during his senior year. Friends, peers, and particularly underclassmen speak of Gerardo as someone they look up to, as he invariably displays a sparkled tone and an energized and often hopeful response to our community. Gerardo is a constant walking and breathing example of what we believe is a Man for Others - no pretense, just a presence.

Job Trahan '20
This year's Senior Crusader Award is given to a senior who has best responded to, and most benefited from, his time as a member of the Strake Jesuit community. Job Trahan's friendly and generous nature, big smile, and even bigger heart brings out the best in those around him. By several measures, he is an outstanding young man. Intelligent, hardworking, and forthright, he is always ready to take on a challenge. He is an extraordinary and dedicated athlete. He is also a man of competence, conscience, and compassion who will no doubt use his many gifts to lead, shape, and change the world around him for the greater glory of God. We are proud of how Job has grown as a Man for Others during his time at Strake Jesuit and we cannot wait to see what he will accomplish at Duke University.

Congratulations, gentlemen! You are all deserving of this great honor. Thank you for being Men for Others in our community.
