Crusader of the Year Awards 2022

Every year, four students are presented with the Crusader of the Year Award. This annual award recognizes one exemplary student from each grade level who has demonstrated the characteristics of a Man for Others. This year’s recipients are Matthew Mejia ’25, J.P. Webber ’24, Chico Holt ’23, and Joel Crawford ’22.

Matthew Mejia ’25 is a straight A student who is welcoming to everyone he encounters. He plays the violin in our chamber orchestra. Outside of school, he is a regionally and nationally ranked competitive fencer. Matthew is a loyal friend, an avid learner, and a hard worker. He is humble and kind, and truly embodies what it means to be a Man for Others

J.P. Webber ’24 is frequently referred to as “an absolute joy to teach” by his teachers. He is a devout Catholic who attends Mass every day. J.P. is a member of the Varsity Rugby team, the National Honor Society, and the Law Club. His outstanding character, unending positivity, and strong moral compass make him a perfect recipient for the Crusader of the Year Award.

Chico Holt ’23 is a highly focused student who has challenged himself by taking eight advanced classes, including five APs, while never making less than an A. He is a highly sought-after football player, who has received scholarship offers to play Division 1 football from schools all over the country. As a junior, he joined the wrestling team and even qualified for State this year. Chico is kind, respectful, hardworking, and resilient, all qualities that define this prestigious award.

Joel Crawford ’22 is a natural leader with a strong moral conviction. Throughout his four years at Strake Jesuit, we have seen Joel not only in the classroom, but also on the football field, as a Kairos group leader, and as Student Body President. He lives his life in a way that inspires others to be better. Joel has left a positive and profound mark on our community, and he will use his many gifts to lead, shape, and change the world for the greater glory of God. We cannot wait to see how Joel will use his many talents at Harvard University.
