12 Jesuit Student Athletes Sign in Spring Signing Day Ceremony

The Strake Jesuit community gathered together in a packed Competition Gym on April 13, 2022, to honor twelve Jesuit student athletes who have made the pledge to compete at the next level.

“We’re always excited to have the opportunity to honor our athletes,” explains Athletics Director Mike Crowley, “we realize that the National Letter of Intent signing day is a special moment not only for the athletes but their coaches, teammates, parents, and the whole school community.” A notable addition to the signing group this time around is senior John Griffin who will be signing with the New Jersey Institute of Technology for fencing in the fall. “We’re very excited to have the opportunity to honor a fencer, John Griffin. Not only is he an accomplished fencer, but he’s nationally ranked. He’s a member of the United States Fencing Team and his resume is really, really impressive.”

This year, the Jesuit Rugby team will be sending six ruggers to play at the collegiate level, a program high since Head Coach Jason Kimball took over in 2019. “It’s a fantastic testament to these guys' hard work to compete at the collegiate level and possibly beyond,” explains Kimball. “Even though NCAA scholarships are limited for Rugby, more and more universities are fully funding rugby programs which help promote the sport at a national and international level.” For the class of 2022, their rugby careers at Jesuit has been anything but smooth sailing. Battling through shortened seasons and countless injuries, these relentless seniors won’t let anything stop them from being a part of the sport they love. “I feel for this class because they have all battled injuries both individually and as a group but many of these guys can not only play collegiately, but also internationally. It’ll be great to watch them grow and follow their playing pathway.”

Though Rugby is typically classified as a club sport at most universities, that isn’t true for Aquinas College. Senior Back Luke Dominey will be attending Aquinas College in the fall where Rugby is classified as a Varsity sport and is fully funded by the university. “Well I’m really excited, first off,” Dominey explains, “it’s awesome because I get to start off the new program there. I get the opportunity to play with a lot of international kids which isn’t an opportunity that I would have elsewhere and I’m really, really excited to spend my next four years there.” Luke Dominey isn’t the only Dominey who was honored at Wednesday's ceremony. Dylan Dominey, Luke’s twin brother, was also in attendance and was honored for going to play rugby at Texas A&M in the fall. “It’s going to be really difficult,” Luke explains about not playing with Dylan anymore. “I’m going to have to find somebody to match my energy and his energy on the field with. I’ll definitely miss him, but it’ll be a lot of fun without him.”

This ceremony will be the final signing day ceremony of the year for Strake Jesuit. At the time of writing, 26 Jesuit student athletes from the class of 2022 will be continuing their academic and athletic careers at the next level.
