Debate Camp

Summary: 
  • Introduction to the St. Agnes Academy and Strake Jesuit College Preparatory Robotics Team, Spectrum.
  • Spectrum competes in the FIRST Robotics Competition, the highest level of competitive high school robotics.
  • Learn the engineering skills involved in building a robot for high school competitions.
  • Learn to use advanced tools including 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC routers to create parts and mechanisms you will help design.
  • Introduction to engineering disciplines such as mechanical engineering, software engineering, and electrical engineering.
  • Guest speakers from a variety of engineering and STEM fields.
  • Computer-Aided Design (CAD), Programming, Machining, Computer Vision, and more.
  • Lead Instructor: Allen Gregory, Spectrum’s Head Coach, has over 22 years of educational robotics experience.

Application

Applications are open to St. Agnes Academy and Strake Jesuit students who will be in 9th or 10th grade in the 2024-25 school year. Preference will be given to incoming 9th-grade students and students who were not already involved in the engineering team. Click here to apply.

  • Required Camp Days: Monday to Friday, June 10th to 21st, 9 am to 4 pm
  • Optional Saturdays: June 16th and June 22nd 1pm to 6pm
  • Optional Robotics Tournament: June 28th to 29th 8am to 8pm

  • What will be accomplished at Debate Camp?

    The goals of Debate Camp are as follows:

    To train dedicated, serious debaters who can’t afford the thousands of dollars for a national camp.

    To create a cadre of well-trained local debaters who can share their skills with their teammates and raise the level of local circuit debate.

    To allow our best and brightest to develop to their full potential.
  • When and where will Debate Camp take place?

    Dates: June 3, 2024 through June 14, 2024
    Schedule: Weekdays from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, except June 14, when we conclude after lunch

    Camp Fee: $700.00 — limited need-based scholarships are also available by contacting Mr. Brock Scheller
  • Who should attend Debate Camp?

    People seeking a foundation for becoming top-notch Public Forum, Lincoln-Douglas, or Congress debaters, especially on the local circuit.

    Incoming Strake Jesuit freshmen or other Strake Jesuit beginning debaters who want to get a head start on their preparation for competition, or just want to get a sense of what high school debate is all about.

    Rising seventh-, eighth-, and ninth-grade girls or boys who want to learn the basics of successful competitive debate.
  • Who will be the instructors?

    Mr. Murvin Auzenne, Mr. Jerry Crist, and Mr. Brock Scheller will be camp co-coordinators and chief instructors. Together, they coach the Strake Jesuit College Preparatory Debate Team. They have helped coach top National debaters: the 2021 TOC Champion in LD; four TFA state champions in 2006, 2008, 2018, and 2021; two TFA runners-up in 2009 and 2011; a third-place finisher in 2010; the 2008 NFL National Champion in LD; and numerous other top national debaters. Mr. Auzenne has also taught at the UT debate camp and the VBI camp.
