Orientation to Ownership

Parsley Center Auditorium
As a Jesuit school we have a special connection with the spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Our thoughts on forming young men in an educational environment are patterned on the insights Ignatius developed regarding our relationship with God. Chief among these insights is our duty to act with greater freedom and responsibility in our relationship with God.

Acceptance to Strake Jesuit brings with it an expectation that students take personal responsibility for their academic work and that parents allow their sons the freedom to function independently. This is not, however, expected to be an overnight shift with parents immediately relinquishing all involvement in their son’s schoolwork. The challenge is to meet the student where he is, and to begin decreasing parent ownership and increasing student ownership, eventually reducing the parents’ role to celebrating the success of their son.

The school’s goal is that students graduate from Jesuit with the skills, self-awareness, and self-advocacy to excel at the university level independently, without parent involvement in organization, planning or performance.

On Saturday August 16, from 8am to 12pm, in the Parsley Center, all parents of incoming students are invited to campus for a fun and interactive exploration of beliefs and practices that will prepare them for this journey toward independence. Topics will include:
  • Natural Consequences vs. Punishment
  • How Courtesy Can Be Kryptonite
  • Random Rewards vs. Contracts
  • Prompting vs. Reminding
  • Parent as Ally
  • Individualized Strategies vs. Study Skills
  • Balancing Freedom with Responsibility
This event is optional, and no RSVP is required. We hope to see you there!
