Alumni Spotlight: Mason Abrell ’22 Pursues a PhD in Physics at MIT

Mason Abrell ’22 will attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology this fall to pursue a PhD in Physics under the guidance of Professor Kevin O’Brien, a leader in quantum information science. His research will focus on modular quantum computing and distributed entanglement using microwave quantum optics.

Mason recently graduated Cum Laude from Yale University on May 18, earning a Bachelor of Science in Physics with Distinction and a double major in Global Affairs with Distinction. At Yale’s commencement ceremony, he received the DEFOREST PIONEERS Award for his senior research project, Quantum Laser Across the Sound: Building Up a Lab. The award recognizes distinguished creative achievement in physics and outstanding scientific accomplishment by a senior physics major.

In recognition of his academic excellence, Mason was inducted into both the Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society and Sigma Pi Sigma, the national physics honor society.

Beyond academics, Mason was involved in Yale campus leadership and service, including the Saint Thomas More Catholic Center, Yale’s Davenport Pops Orchestra, and as Co-Director of The Kimball Smith Series, which explores issues at the intersection of science, technology, ethics, and global affairs.

Before beginning his doctoral studies at MIT, Mason plans to spend the summer traveling internationally with family and friends!
