Strake Jesuit's instrumental program develops the aesthetic values and talents of our students. Through individual and group performances at athletic events, pep rallies, festivals, graduation and in big band and orchestral concerts, our music department shines brightly. The Symphonic Band, Jazz Ensemble, Orchestra and Mixed Chorus give students with different musical tastes and abilities a chance to express themselves and develop their talents to the fullest. For those who like to sing, the combined Saint Agnes/Strake Jesuit Mixed Chorus (click here to learn more) encourages the development and the expression of the student through vocal music. Students can also participate in a group that prepares and leads the music for school liturgical events.

Instrumental Ensembles are open to both Strake Jesuit and St. Agnes Students! These ensembles include Band (Pep Band/Symphonic Band/Wind Ensemble – woodwinds, brass, and percussion), Jazz Ensemble (saxophone, trombone, trumpet, piano, guitar, bass, drums), Chamber Orchestra (strings only), and Symphony Orchestra (strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion). All of our music rehearsals take place in the Parsley Center on the Strake Jesuit campus.
The Band is made up of Strake Jesuit and St. Agnes Students and is over 100 members strong! The band has two main functions: to serve as a pep band during football season and to serve as a concert band(s) during the remainder of the school year. During the fall semester, after football season, all band members will be in one large symphonic band. During the spring semester, we split the band into two ensembles – Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. We do not have a marching band, but rather a pep band that performs in the stands during football games and on the field during halftime, by playing while standing still. The band rehearses Monday through Friday from 7:00 am-7:45 am and is a registered course where a 0.5 fine arts credit is received per semester, attendance is taken, and grades are received. Auditions for the band will be held one week before school begins and also during the first week of school. Please contact the Band Director – Mr. Ben Ware – at firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
The Jazz Ensemble is made up of Strake Jesuit and St. Agnes Students. The Jazz Ensemble is made up of saxophones, trombones, trumpets, piano, electric guitar, bass, and drums. The Jazz Ensemble rehearses Mondays and Wednesdays from 3:15 pm-4:00 pm in the band hall and is a registered course where 0.25 fine arts credit is received per semester, attendance is taken, and grades are received. Students interested in auditioning should plan to attend all rehearsals. Auditions for Jazz Ensemble are held after school begins. Students who make the Jazz Ensemble will be registered for the course. Please contact the Band Director – Mr. Ben Ware – at email@example.com for more information.
Chamber and Symphony Orchestras
Both orchestras are open to students of both Strake Jesuit and Saint Agnes Academy. Throughout the year, the orchestra will play the music of master composers of the Baroque, Classic, and Romantic periods. It is the only private high school string orchestral program in the Houston area earning academic credit.
Mixed Chorus is comprised of over 130 students from both Strake Jesuit and St. Agnes Academy. Students in Mixed Chorus meet daily on the St. Agnes campus, have access to private voice lessons in the St. Agnes Academy Voice Studio, participate in Texas Private School Music Educators Association region and all-state auditions as well as solo and ensemble competition, feature Handel's Messiah in their traditional Christmas concert, and enjoy an annual tour to cities such as New York, San Francisco, Boston, and Chicago. The Mixed Chorus consistently places more students in the TPSMEA All-State Choir than any other high school in the competition.
